Allowing marine ilmenite sand mining in Mannar district may cause environmental destruction, sea erosion, effects on fishing industry, destruction of biodiversity and as a result the life of the people in that area may also be affected. Accordingly, the civic, mass, religious and citizen organizations that recognized the problems organized a protest demonstration and rally in Mannar city center today (26). A large number of people attended the event to inform the people about the future disaster and gain the attention of the authorities to it. Mr. Thilak Kariyawasam, Executive Director of Fian Sri Lanka, also participated in the event and gave comments.
