Field Trip – Danthure, Pallakotuwa Agroecological Farming | Nyéléni Global Forum 2025
Field trips were conducted on 12/09/2025, among the programs implemented in conjunction with the Nyéléni Global Conference held at the National Cooperative Development Institute, Polgolla. One of the field trips was the Pallakotuwa Agroecological and Food Sovereignty Model led by the Lanka Organic Agricultural Movement.
This is a community-based ecological model as well as a living example of traditional agriculture. They have built an empowered community with local crop diversity, food sovereignty and the environment using the Kandyan Home Garden model. The main crops are cloves, nutmeg, and pepper.
In addition, this garden environment is a good support for preserving biodiversity and includes garden grains, fruits, vegetables, medicinal and pest-repelling plants and nutritious food crops. Methods such as compost and organic manure, shade plants have been adopted for soil conservation.
This field trip was a good confirmation of the contribution that this community is making to achieving ecological agriculture and food sovereignty in Sri Lanka. This field trip was attended by 55 foreign delegates and 25 farmers from the Sri Lanka Organic Farmers Association.
